Apple Pie

Shoutout to our second place winner of the 2021 Chef-It-Up with PR contest, Maram Bakbak, for submitting their mouthwatering Apple Pie recipe featuring ingredients from our PR basket, flour and sugar. It’s the perfect dessert for late-night or post-Iftar sweet cravings!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Recipe for double pie crust
  • 6 Granny Smith apples (thinly sliced)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • 9″ pie plate

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 °F.
  2. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Whisk in 3 tbsp flour then simmer for 1 min, whisking constantly.
  4. Whisk in 1/4 cup water, 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and continue simmering 3 min, whisking frequently then remove from heat.
  5. Peel, remove cores, and thinly slice the apples. Place in a bowl and sprinkle the top with cinnamon and toss to combine. Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat apple slices.
  6. Sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll out bottle crust to a 12″ diameter circle. Wrap it around your rolling pin to transfer it to the 9″ pie plate. Add apple mixture to the center, avoiding edges.
  7. Roll the second crust into an 11″ round circle and cut into 10 even thickness strips using a pizza cutter. Arrange strips in a woven lattice pattern over the top.
  8. Beat together 1 egg and 1 tbsp water and brush the top.
  9. Bake for 15 min at 425 °F. Reduce heat to 350 °F and continue baking another 45 min or until apples are soft and filling is bubbling through vents. Rest at room temp for 1 hour before serving.
