Apple Pie
Shoutout to our second place winner of the 2021 Chef-It-Up with PR contest, Maram Bakbak, for submitting their mouthwatering Apple Pie recipe featuring ingredients from our PR basket, flour and sugar. It’s the perfect dessert for late-night or post-Iftar sweet cravings!
Ingredients:
- 1 Recipe for double pie crust
- 6 Granny Smith apples (thinly sliced)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp All-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
- 9″ pie plate
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 425 °F.
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in 3 tbsp flour then simmer for 1 min, whisking constantly.
- Whisk in 1/4 cup water, 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and continue simmering 3 min, whisking frequently then remove from heat.
- Peel, remove cores, and thinly slice the apples. Place in a bowl and sprinkle the top with cinnamon and toss to combine. Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat apple slices.
- Sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll out bottle crust to a 12″ diameter circle. Wrap it around your rolling pin to transfer it to the 9″ pie plate. Add apple mixture to the center, avoiding edges.
- Roll the second crust into an 11″ round circle and cut into 10 even thickness strips using a pizza cutter. Arrange strips in a woven lattice pattern over the top.
- Beat together 1 egg and 1 tbsp water and brush the top.
- Bake for 15 min at 425 °F. Reduce heat to 350 °F and continue baking another 45 min or until apples are soft and filling is bubbling through vents. Rest at room temp for 1 hour before serving.
