About Us
Building Baskets, Building Bridges
The year 2025 will mark our 16th year of fighting hunger and empowering communities!
Our Story
Project Ramadan was founded in 2009 by a group of young adults in partnership with the Muslim Welfare Canada (MWC). The founders were motivated by the need to address food insecurity in Canada, particularly during Ramadan, a time when Muslims traditionally give back to the community.
Run entirely by volunteers, Project Ramadan is an initiative dedicated to providing support to families across Ontario that are in need, through fundraising and assembling food baskets. Drawing on the MWC’s years of experience serving the community, Project Ramadan was born with the aim of providing healthy staple food items to families in need during the holy month. What began as a grassroots initiative quickly grew into a larger effort, reaching communities beyond the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The Spirit of Ramadan →
Our mission is rooted in the spirit of Ramadan—turning compassion into action and ensuring that no one goes hungry during this important time. Through collective giving, we aim to strengthen our communities, uplift those in need, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of families across Ontario and beyond.
Growing Our Impact
Over the years, we have expanded our reach to Ottawa as well as the Canadian Arctic, where food insecurity remains a pressing issue. These efforts have reinforced our belief that food insecurity is not confined to any single region or community, and we remain committed to fighting hunger year-round.
As we continue to grow, our goal is to ensure that no Canadian, regardless of their background, goes without the food they need to thrive. Together, we’re building a future where hunger is a thing of the past.
The Heart of Our Mission
Project Ramadan thrives thanks to the dedication and passion of our volunteers, who come together every year to help pack and distribute food baskets. One of the most powerful aspects of our initiative is that we are entirely volunteer-run, meaning that 100% of donations go directly to those in need. Volunteers, along with generous donors, ensure that every dollar contributed is spent on providing food to families and individuals facing hunger.
This community-driven initiative is supported by the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners who share our vision of creating a hunger-free Canada.
