The Significance of Charity (Zakat and Sadaqah) During Ramadan

The Significance of Charity (Zakat and Sadaqah) During Ramadan

Ramadan is a month dedicated to fasting, prayer, and acts of generosity. Through Zakat and Sadaqah, charity takes on great importance, with its rewards amplified during this holy time.

Zakat: A Pillar of Islam

Zakat, or obligatory charity, is one of the five pillars of Islam, requiring eligible Muslims to give 2.5% of their savings to those in need. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Sahih Muslim 2588)

During Ramadan, believers pay Zakat to purify their wealth and uplift the less fortunate, reinforcing the empathy that fasting cultivates.

Sadaqah: Voluntary Acts of Kindness

Unlike Zakat, Sadaqah is voluntary and can be given in any form—money, food, kindness. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Sadaqah (charity) extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi 614)

Following the Prophet’s example of generosity, Muslims increase their Sadaqah, supporting food drives, sponsoring Iftars, and helping communities. “Every act of goodness is sadaqah.” (Sahih Muslim 1005)

The Blessings of Giving

  1. Increased Rewards: Every good deed performed in Ramadan is multiplied. The reward for charity is magnified even more. “Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1746)
  2. Forgiveness of Sins: Giving charity during Ramadan is one of the ways to seek forgiveness for past mistakes. Allah’s mercy is more abundant during this month, and the act of giving opens doors to forgiveness and blessings.
  3. Increased Barakah (Blessings) in Wealth: Charity doesn’t diminish wealth, but instead, it brings blessings and increases. The Quran mentions “And whatever you spend in charity, He will compensate ˹you˺ for it. For He is the Best Provider.” (Quran 34:39)
  4. Purification of the Heart: Giving charity purifies the soul and promotes a sense of humility and gratitude. It helps individuals detach from worldly possessions and reminds them of their dependence on Allah, fostering a deeper spiritual connection.
